Rent Increase in British Columbia, Canada
Allowable rent increases in British Columbia
are governed by the Residential Tenancy Act. Residential tenancy
landlords are allowed to increase rent annually by a percentage
equal to the inflation rate plus two percent without tenants disputing
the increase at arbitration.
What you should know about rent increase:
- allowable rent increase for residential tenancy in
2012 is 4.3%
- 3-month written
notice of a rent increase is required
- rent can only be increased once in a twelve month period
- tenant may agree, in writing, to a rent increase greater than
the prescribed amount
- landlords may request an additional increase only in extraordinary
circumstances at arbitration
- tenants can not dispute the rent increase unless the increase
is more than the allowable amount
